Als ich letztes Mal in Deuschland war, gab es Interesse für einen Hiestandtreff. Vielleicht in Richterswil.
Austauschstudenten? Hätten Sie noch Ideen?

New Zealand's Joe Hiestand Visits Hillsboro Counrtpart On World Trip to Find Kin
Joe Hiestand met Joe Hiestand, and thereby hangs this tale. One Joe Hiestand is the local farmer and internationally known trap-shooter, who lives just west of here on Route 50. The other Joe Hiestand is also a farmer, who lives-far-west of here—in Taranaki North Island, New Zealand, to be exact.
The two "Joe's" got together last Thursday, when New Zealand Joe dropped off to see local Joe on the last leg of his journey around the world, tracing relatives, Joe from New Zealand heard about Joe from Hillsboro in 1938, when the local man set records galore in trap-shoots around the United States. Friends of New Zealand Joe saw the articles in the paper and asked htm if he had been to the U.S. to take part in the shoots.
The New Zealander said he had been thinking about the local Joe Hiestand since that time, and, this year, when he decided to make a trip to his native Switzerland - where, by the way, both the New Zealand Hiestand and the Hillsboro Hiestand have traced their origin — he made plans to continue on around the world to see if he could find some relatives.
TRAVELING by air, Hiestand went to Switzerland and from there to other Europen countries. He came to this country last week, and his trip, which started in May, will end with his return to New Zealand sometime in November.Owner and operator of a large dairy farm, the visitor brought a projector and a large number of colored slides, showing his family and scenes of the New Zealand countryside. His family consists of a wife, named Mary, the same as the local Mr. Hiestand, and nine children, one named Linda same as one of the local Hiestand children.
New Zealand Joe is very interested in farming, as well he should be since he controls some 675 acres of land there. He has 200 head of Jersey cattle—"Two herds of 100, actually" and 700 head of Romney sheep.
Discussing farming in New Zealand and the U. S. he said that prices compete favorably with those in this, area in most instances. There are some differences, however, such as in the milk sales, where bulk milk is sold on the basis of the butterfat, instead of on the gallon basis. Hog prices are about the same, while prices of lambs--he sold 466 last year—average about "3 pounds" which is equivalent to $9 per lamb here
ONE THING he noted after a trip to various farms in the county was that the pasture here is not properly cared for in order to get the most out of the grass. New Zealand dairymen feed no grain, only pasture, which consists chiefly of bluegrass and alfalfa. "Farmers would say that your pastures are too weedy." he said "While we have some pastures with weeds there, it is only among the backward farmers."
Farm land sells for between $400 and $600 an acre in New Zealand among the better farms.
Discussing these subjects like a British farm expert, the visitor said at "we believe in the heavy use of fertilizer. We have found that it is better to put on 600 pounds per acre, then skip a year, than to put on 300 pounds per acre for two years." He noted that he had been using this system for "30-odd years," and that some pasture land that had had no fertilizer for six years is still a rich, dark green.
Comparing this country to Switzerland, he said that the farming methods of these two countries are about the same as far as crops are concerned, although the Swiss "get more out of the ground" than the U. S. farmer. "They have to," he explained, "since their country is so thickly populated and farms are smaller"
As for modern methods on the farm, the visitor said that he had been using pipeline milkers which came into use here a relatively short time ago, for the past 40 years. Artificial insemination of dairy cattle has been conducted there on a large scale for the past two or three years.
ACCORDING to him, the New Zealand government is going all out to help the farmers there, with an extensive research program and a number of "trial farms" run by the government, spaced about 20 miles apart.
Getting back to the local Joe and his two large cases of trophies, the visitor said that although he used to be a pretty good shot, he has not competed in any trap shoot that has U. S. counterpart. "I started out on my own in 1927, and we had to scratch through the slump." he related "I gave up all activites but working my farm so that I might be a success I think I have been to a certain degree."
The 47-year-old visitor, who left here. Wednesday, to go to Canada, said that he left Switzerland with his father and brother in 1922. He is now a British citizen. "I have been working toward a trip back home to my country since I started farming." he said, "and I've finally made it."
Hillsboro's Joe said he would like to repay the visit to the downunder visitor sometime. If a trapshooting team ever goes that way, it could happen. There's a possibility in the 1956 Olympics but at the moment, it's uncertain. Anyway, there will always be a welcome waiting at Taranaki Joe's for that man from Hillsboro.

Joe Hiestands Meet Again New Zealander on World Trip
Will the real Joe Hiestand please stand up?
When you asked that question last week at the Hiestand farm at the western edge of Hillsboro, you could get two for-real answers. New Zealand's Joe Hiestand returned for another visit with Hillsboro's Joe Hiestand. It's been 10 years since he was here. It all started about 1938 when Hillsboro's Joe won a trapshooting event at Vandaha by hitting 1,404 consecutive targets in a row. This feat set a world's record and achieved world wide publicity, which in time reached the family of Joe Hiestand of New Zealand. Friends in New Zealand asked their Joe about this event, but he assured them that this event was won by another Joe Hiestand. Curiosity got the cat, and it seems that Joe Hiestand in New Zealand just had to find out about this other man who was using his name.
In 1938, he set a goal to someday find the other Joe Hiestand. Finally, in October, 1955, he visited the United States. Upon arrival in New York he set about the task of finding his double. The only address that he had was Joe Hiestand, Ohio. By asking everyone that he could find, he found a library that had telephone directories of all the states. From there he looked in all of the books that contained Ohio numbers until he found a Joe Hiestand of Hillsboro.
AS THE JOES found one another, it was found that both of the men had wives by the same name, Mary, and each of the two men had a daughter named Linda. Perhaps the greatest difference between the two men is that Joe Hiestand of New Zealand has 10 children while Joe Hiestand of Hillsboro has three. The New Zealander migrated from Switzerland with his father in 1922. In New Zealand he farms approximately 700 acres of land, specializing in dairy and beef cattle, and sheep. He states that the weather there is very conducive to good farming and that they have only about six frosts per year. In visiting his farm one would find approximately 140 head of Jersey cows, a variety of beef cattle and 1,400 head of sheep. Actually the ground is divided into three separate farms, with the old homestead having 140 acres, and the rest divided between two other farms. Hiestand will be visiting in the states until about the middle of December.
Joe is traveling by himself as he roams about the world seeing the various sights. The main reason for stopping in 1955, was that he had relatives in Switzerland, and this was on his way back home. Again this year he has been visiting the same relatives and these isits have afforded him the opportunity to visit Hillsboro for a second time.
Apparently both Hiestand families had their roots in Switzerland but no close connection has been definitely established. Hillsboro's Joe determined just recently that his ancestry traces back to Jacob Hiestand of Switzerland who migrated to America in 1727. A descendant of his, also named Jacob Hiestand, who lived from 1690 to 1772, gave Sinking Spring its first piece of ground. He is now buried in the cemetery at Sinking Spring. Chances are pretty good that somewhere way back along the line, the two men may be related, depending on the number of Hiestands that Switzerland produced.

Hiestands Return From Trip To Switzerland
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hiestand recently returned from a visit to Switzerland. Special places visited were Montreaux, Geneva, and Zurich. While in Zurich they met Mr. and Mrs. Nunn-Hiestand, the latter being a
sister of Mr. Joseph Hiestand, of New Zealand who has stopped on two occasions in Hillsboro. The first time as he spoke to the children of the Lynchburg Schools and the second time to the children of Washington School. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hiestand of Hillsboro were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Werner Hiestand and Miss Elizabeth Hiestand of Horgen by Lake Zurich. They also met with Emil Hiestand of Richterswil on Lake Zurich. He has been active in gathering together the family of Hiestand.
In 1974 machten die Graphiker Ernst und Ursula Hiestand von Zollikon Zürich die Designs für die neue Schweizer Banknoten. Seit 1976 führten Schweizer Banknoten den Name Hiestand. Man sieht «E + U Hiestand» unten links am Rand.
